Dear Parents,

I am writing to keep you informed on the current COVID-19 situation in New Zealand, the school’s view on the borders, and our approach for the upcoming December – January school holidays. We hope that this will give you enough information for a well-informed and considered plan for your son, and we ask that you reply to this email to advise us of your decision.

Current COVID-19 situation in New Zealand relating to International Students

  • Auckland is currently at Alert Level 4 with strict restrictions aiming to control the virus and bring life back to normal as soon as possible.
  • The New Zealand government has announced its intention to gradually open our borders from early 2022 to vaccinated travellers, based on whether they are from low, medium and high risk countries.
  • The Minister of Education indicated that border restrictions are likely to continue for the coming 9-12 months.
  • The government does not view the current Managed Isolation and Quarantine (MIQ) scheme as a solution for the re-entry of school aged students if they return home for a holiday.
  • There may be other approaches at the border in the future depending on vaccine and vaccine passports.
  • The COVID-19 vaccine roll out programme is most likely to be completed by the end of 2021.
Immigration New Zealand has extended its suspension of offshore temporary visas including student visa applications till February 2022.

We are of the view that New Zealand’s borders are again NOT likely to reopen to international school-aged students by early 2022.

What does this mean to your son for the upcoming December-January school holiday if he chooses to go home?

  • Your son will not be able to return to New Zealand if he chooses to go home.
  • His education in New Zealand will most likely be disrupted and discontinued.
  • His travel and medical insurance will not be extended to cover medical costs if he is infected overseas.
  • His student visa renewal will not be processed in time for him to come back even if New Zealand’s borders reopen.

We strongly believes that it is still in the best interests of your son to stay in New Zealand at the end of 2021 for his December – January school holidays, instead of returning home.

We understand that not seeing your son for yet another year will be extremely disappointing and difficult for your family, however, the current situation leads us to conclude that keeping him in New Zealand would be the safest, and most educationally beneficial for your son.

If you agree for your son to stay in New Zealand during the December – January School Holiday, we will help organise his accommodation if needed. We know some students will be able to stay with parents, local relatives, or a guardian. Others will most likely stay with their existing host families or a new homestay family.

Last summer holidays, some of our students participated in our holiday activities and travel tours. This year we will continue to work with other schools and external providers to provide a number of holiday options to your son.

We now ask for you to please indicate your preferred option about your son remaining in, or leaving New Zealand by clicking on the button below and completing the questions asked. This will help us with our planning.

Thank you for your attention, I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Kind regards,
